Samantha Saves a Star Altoids Tin Diorama Project

This is the super-secret project you may have heard me tweeting about a while back. I wanted to do something nice for my friend @ToddGallina. Todd’s a creative genius, and one of his current projects is illustrating a children’s book called Samantha Saves a Star (watch for it on Amazon…coming soon – I’ll keep you posted!). I fell in love with one of the thumbnails he had done of Samantha sitting on her swing looking up at the night sky and I wanted to turn that into a fun little altoids tin diorama. Continue Reading →

The Return of Campus Mail

In college my friend Rob and I used to send each other campus mail. Why? Why not. It was free. We were bored. It was entertaining. It was better than bills in the mail. We live many hours apart now, but we decided to bring back campus mail. Like I said, it’s better than bills in the mailbox, and a bit more quaint than facebook. It’s paper and ink and glue and tape and you can hold it in your hand and it is the best thing you’ve picked up all day because someone created this ridiculous *thing* for YOU. This is Volume 07282009_01 of IALCM (It’s Almost Like Campus Mail). Don’t try to understand it. It doesn’t need understanding. Or analyzing. It just is. Hopefully it makes one smile. Or recognize. Or something. I haven’t decided yet if I will post all volumes. Or episodes. I haven’t decided what to call them yet. Maybe some will show up here and some will be more elusive. Want some IALCM? Maybe you’ll find one in your mailbox. If you’re lucky. Maybe.

bubble ghosts

i was browsing through photos tonight, trying to find a macro i took of the moss in my yard for Cat Rocketship, and i stumbled across some pics i took at the sculpture garden last spring. in the garden, there is a greenhouse with a giant carp made out of glass panels rising from a pool (Standing Glass Fish, Frank Gehry), and i took this photo of the bubbles in the pool reflecting the glass fish. i hadn’t looked at it closely before. tonight when i rotated it, i could see faces in the bubbles. especially that group of 3 near the bottom, which looks like three little heads stacked up, and the face on top looks almost like a blythe doll (/sigh, i’ve never been a doll girl, but i want a blythe doll, i love the way their eyes can move and change color). bubble ghosts with big black eyes. i might have to paint something from this.
