New digital painting in progress – Horseplay
by yiddle on Oct.18, 2009, under Art, Digital Painting, WIP
Today we went to the aquarium with my niece and her two kids. I was inspired by a bunch of seahorses with their tails all curled around the coral. I thought my little Japanese girl would have fun playing with the seahorses in her dreams while she’s taking her nap. D argued that it’s dumb because the horse couldn’t even fit the apple in its mouth. I rolled my eyes at him.
I’m using the sumi-e and artist’s oils brushes in Painter X and scanned origami paper as the background. I’ve still got some work to do, on the tail and the girl’s hair and the line work and just general here and there stuff, but I think I made pretty good progress tonight.
Imaginary Tourism Postcards Part 2

Another meeting doodle. Sometimes I doodle because the meeting has gone off on a giant tangent that doesn’t concern me. Sometimes I doodle because it helps me figure things out. Sometimes I am half thinking/contributing and half doodling, and that is when i make mistakes like this one where the fish is floating upside down. He’s not dead, because there are bubbles. Let’s just pretend he was scared by the giant cat and was making a quick loop-de-loop getaway.

This is what happens when I get stuck in a side-tracked meeting where the side-track doesn’t concern me.
The Nap – finished digital painting
by yiddle on Aug.15, 2009, under Art, Digital Painting
This is the first in what I hope will be a series of 12 digital paintings inspired by some gorgeous origami paper. I used Painter X and mainly focused on the Artist’s Oils and Sumi-e brushes. Tonight I finished off her feet and hands and cleaned up some edges. I told @ToddGallina I’d have her done by the 15th, and I squeaked in just under the deadline. I should have him make imaginary deadlines for me more often. I worked on the Cintiq at my new desk and I think I’m going to have to rearrange things a bit, my right arm and shoulder feel really tired even though I only spent about 2 hours on it.
The Return of Campus Mail

In college my friend Rob and I used to send each other campus mail. Why? Why not. It was free. We were bored. It was entertaining. It was better than bills in the mail. We live many hours apart now, but we decided to bring back campus mail. Like I said, it’s better than bills in the mailbox, and a bit more quaint than facebook. It’s paper and ink and glue and tape and you can hold it in your hand and it is the best thing you’ve picked up all day because someone created this ridiculous *thing* for YOU. This is Volume 07282009_01 of IALCM (It’s Almost Like Campus Mail). Don’t try to understand it. It doesn’t need understanding. Or analyzing. It just is. Hopefully it makes one smile. Or recognize. Or something. I haven’t decided yet if I will post all volumes. Or episodes. I haven’t decided what to call them yet. Maybe some will show up here and some will be more elusive. Want some IALCM? Maybe you’ll find one in your mailbox. If you’re lucky. Maybe.
New Painting WIP – Finally!
by yiddle on Jul.04, 2009, under Art, WIP
I bought some gorgeous origami paper yesterday at my neighbor’s garage sale that inspired me to start a new series. Since the paper was 8″ square and I want these finished pieces to be much larger, I scanned and painted on top in Painter using the Artist’s Oils and Sumi-e brushes. I love my Cintiq
Anyhoo, I gotta run if I’m going to go see fireworks but here’s the first WIP (work in progress).
